My mum and I landed back in Melbourne the other day after a very relaxing holiday in Port Douglas. Port Douglas is a small town, 40 minutes north of Cairns in Northern Queensland. It is the start of the wet season but we picked the right days to be there as all we had was sun.
On our days off from touring we spent a lot of time swimming in the lagoon pool, just out the back door of our villa, eating out, reading and drinking Coronas. We visited The Rainforest Habitat and fed the ducks, wallabies and kangaroos and even petted a freshwater crocodile.
On day three of our trip we headed out with 'Haba' to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef. We snorkeled at two different spots on the reef and though the coral isn't as colourful as you'd imagine it would be, we saw a vast variety of tropical fish including trumpetfish, angelfish, clownfish and parrotfish. The water was a gorgeous 29 degrees, but because it's stinger season we had to wear stinger suits which are a bit like a thin, hooded wetsuit. Very pretty (ahem)!
We did a tour of the Daintree Rainforest on day four. With our guide Syd we walked through the forest, took a guided boat across the Daintree River (though we missed out on seeing any snakes or crocodiles), ended up getting stuck in one of the creeks heading up to Cape Tribulation (which was exciting), and ate some of the best ice cream I've had at The Daintree Ice Cream shop. The Daintree forest was full of mangrove and mango trees, twisting vines, spiky ferns, broad leafed plants and even a few spiders. It's a beautiful part of the world and very different from anything else I've seen in Australia.
Both my mum and I were a bit sad to leave our little paradise but it was a great holiday with no complaints from either one of us.
