B & I have splurged these last couple of weeks, eating out at Melbourne and Kyentons finest! We had a 5-course set menu last weekend at the Royal George Hotel in Kyneton for Granite Hills wineries, very special, 40th anniversary. We were introduced to their wine at my friends E & J's wedding and we've been hooked ever since!
At the RGH we dined at one long table with 70 others on tempura oysters, Jerusalem artichoke soup with marigolds and morton bay bugs (more like lobster than insects), duck, 24-hr braised beef cheek with parsley mash and a rhubarb, pear and burnt butter and pine nut dessert. The gracious owners of Granite Hills started us off with sparkling wine and they matched each course with a 1995 vintage as well as with a glass of their 2009 Pinot Noir, Cab Sav and Shiraz. We finished off with a beautiful dessert wine and needless to say everyone was getting a bit more talkative by the end of the night! Simply scrumptious!
This past Thursday we dined with friends at Melbournes top-rated restaurant Cutler & Co. This time the 7 of us lashed out for an 8-course degustation and two bottles of shiraz. Some of our meal consisted of clair de lune oysters, cured kingfish, raw, cooked and pickled carrot salad with walnut cream, WA marron, short rib, and a violet ice cream with chocolate ganache and sour cherry (photo left). The service was fantastic, the bathroom was stocked with Aesop products and as far as the food goes, only a Wow! can describe it.
I will be curbing my expensive appetite for another month or two as it's hurting my savings but who can blame me for trying!
